New York Day 1 - Liberty
This morning we caught the ferry to Ellis Island (originally an immigrant processing and detention centre) and then to the Statue of Liberty. Built from copper sheets hammered into shape in wooden frames, and attached to an iron formwork designed by Gustav Eiffel, it's a stunning blend of engineering and art. It was fascinating looking at the prototype models and watching as the design was gradually perfected. Not sure we could pull it off these days!
