... and trapped in Rome

Rome is great, and after a big day walking around the Vatican yesterday... Sistine Chapel rates a huge WOW... today we checked out the Catacombs on the old Appian Way. But now, due to the volcanic ash cloud, all flights to France are cancelled. There is a huuuuge queue at the railway station, and all trains are full until April 20th. What to do? Still working on it Anyway, will keep updating the blog with Rome photo highlights.

  2. Hi Phil and Louise, Enjoying keeping up with your blog, and imagining you in all those wonderful places soaking up the history and ambiance. Did you get to do a night walk around the fountains in Rome? What about taking a hire car down around the Amalfi coast (south of Naples, via Pompeii)while you languish in Rome? (I was stuck there in 1997 in a bomby bus with broken air-con if it's any consolation). Don't forget a walk to the veritae mundi (mouth of truth). One other thought -how much quicker (and more adventurous) would it be to grab a cheap hire car and drive to Paris - you guys would have a lot of fun and see a lot of beautiful countryside along the way. It's not too far, and you could eat all the cheap authentic non-tourist food in little villages. Hotels are often cheap and historic too. OK, enough of the unsolicited essay. Take care, and I hope it works out. Love Robbie.(frustrated, unqualified travel agent.)

  3. Robbie, thanks for the ideas - but every hire car in Europe, like every train and bus, is booked out, and hyper inflated in price! Hoping for a plane flight tomorrow.
